Description

IC2944, also known as the Running Chicken Nebula, is a cosmic cloud teeming with newborn stars located roughly 6,500 light-years away in the southern constellation Centaurus. This colourful nebula gets its nickname from the resemblance of its brightest region to a running chicken. IC2944 is actually a combination of two things: an open cluster of stars and an emission nebula. Emission nebulae are clouds of gas and dust that glow brightly due to the energetic radiation emitted by young stars within them. The Running Chicken Nebula is known for containing dark, dense clumps called Bok globules, which are often stellar nurseries.
